Provincial Indoor Championships #1

PASSTRAK ATHLETES MEDAL AT PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS On February 17th & 18th Athletics Alberta held the first of 2 Provincial Championship track & field meets to culminate the 2018 indoor competition season. The meet was held at the University of Alberta in Edmonton and involved the Tyke, Peewee & Bantam age groups which are the under 10 years old, 10 & 11 years old and the 12 & 13 years old athletes respectively. The meet was also used as the Provincial Championships for the Pentathlon which is a series of events testing an individual athletes abilities in all of the disciplines of track & field. The event is comparable to the Women’s Heptathlon and Men’s Decathlon in the Olympics where the athlete is required to run distance races, sprint races and also to jump & throw. These athletes are said to be the best all around track and field athletes as they need to be proficient in all aspects of the sport and not just specialize in one. Libbey Wilmot participated in the Pentathlon in the girls 14 & 15 year old, (Midget), age group. She represented her club superbly by earning a silver Alberta Provincial Championship medal for her efforts. Her first event was the 60m sprint where she recorded a time of 9.48 seconds, her fastest ever, to score 449 points. The second event was the high jump where she cleared 1.23 metres for 340 points. Next came the shot put where she tossed the implement 6.63 metres earning 311 points. The 4th event was the long jump where Libbey spanned 3.97 metres for 301 points. The final event of the Pentathlon is the 800 metres which tests the athletes endurance. She completed the race in 2:50.67 which chopped a full 9 seconds off her previous best time. That also scored a whopping 457 points to bring her total to 1858 earning her the silver medal. Just to keep herself busy Libbey also competed in 2 individual events. She ran a life time best of 11.75 seconds in the 60 metre hurdles for 7th place and then cut 6 seconds off her life time best in the 1200 metres by running 4:40.85. That also set a new Passtrak club record for her age group in that event. Nine other Passtrak athletes competed in 55 individual events during the 2 day track meet. They produced 14 personal best performances, set 17 new Passtrak club records and earned 1 more silver and 2 bronze medals for their efforts. Finley Wilmot and Carson Hay had 6 events each in the Tyke Boys age group. Finley ran a best ever 9.93 seconds in the 60 metres and a best ever of 33.22 seconds in the 150 metres. He then ran the 400 metres in 1:41.41 which improved his previous time by 6 seconds and set a new Passtrak club record as well. His 50 metre sprint time set a new club record at 10.94 seconds and he broke the club record in the standing long jump by 14 cm after clearing 1.22 metres. His final event was the shot put where he measured 2.77 metres. Carson was similarly successful. He ran the 50 metres in 11.06 seconds for a new club record and finished the 60 metres in 12.81 seconds. His 150 metre time was 33.08 seconds for a life time best. He improved his 400 metre time by 7 seconds and set a new club record by running 1:41.85. He improved his shot put distance by 54 cm out to 3.20 metres and he broke the club record in the standing long jump by 43 cm when he cleared 1.51 metres. Cohen Musschoot was Passtrak’s only Peewee age male athlete. He was competing in his first official meet as a Passtrak athlete. He ran the 50 metres in 8.49 seconds, setting a new club record. He then completed the 60 metres in 9.98 seconds. He broke the Passtrak record in the 150 metres by 2.4 seconds with a 24.57 second result. His 600 metre time was 2:11.10 and he recorded 5.56 metres in the shot put. His final event was the standing long jump where he jumped 1.82 metres breaking the existing club record by 13 cm and winning a bronze medal. Devon MacGregor set a new club record of 8.79 seconds in the Peewee girls 50m, then ran a life time best of 10.22 seconds in the 60 metres. Her 24.40 seconds in the 150 metres was a life time best and she finished the 600 metres in 2:25.95. She threw 4.94 metres in the shot put then cleared 1.80 metres in the standing long jump to set a new club record. Avaya Ellis had 6 events in the Bantam girls division. She set a new club record of 8.30 seconds in the 50 metres then ran a life time best of 9.77 seconds in the 60 metres. She also improved her 150 metre time to 23.90 seconds. Her final race was the 600 metres where she finished in 2:13.21. Her best shot put landed at 4.69 metres and she grabbed a silver medal in the high jump by clearing 1.35 metres. Summer Musschoot was also in the Bantam girls division. She also set a club record in the 50 metres. Her time was 8.15 seconds. She then ran 9.59 seconds in the 60 metres and 23.90 seconds in the 150 metres which was a personal best. Her 600 metre time was 2:07.30 and her shot put cleared 6.32 metres. Her best in high jump was 1.10 metres. Edison Wilmot set a new club record in the Bantam boys 50 metres with a 9.81 second run. He then ran the 60 metres in 11.45 seconds, the 150 metres in 29.72 seconds and the 600 metres in 2:48.31. His shot put measured 4.63 metres and his high jump topped out at 1.00 metres. Sawyer Sawatzky also set a new Bantam boys 50 metre club record by recording 8.95 seconds. His 60 metre time was 10.45 seconds, his 150 metre time was 26.86 seconds and his 600 metre time was 2:26.72. Sawyers best shot put landed at 6.23 metres and he cleared 1.10 metres in high jump. Jack Bailey was Passtrak’s third Bantam boys competitor. He also set a new Bantam boys 50 metre club record with a time of 8.78 seconds. His 60 metre time was 10.52 seconds and his 600 metre time was a life time best of 2:14.16. He improved his shot put best by a full metre out to 6.06 metres and he improved his high jump by 20 cm to 1.20 metres. Sawyer, Edison, Cohen and Jack teamed up to place 4th in the Bantam boys 4 x 200 metre relay in 2:30.01 and then moved up to the bronze medal position in the 4 x 100 metres by timing 1:09.04 which also set a new Passtrak club record.
